Covert exercise weekend - debrief!

Face Detect ran its two-day course in London recently and what a success. Students were immersed in an action-packed, intense weekend of classroom learning and practical experience.

On Saturday morning, students learned about Super Recognisers and their operational uses. We then moved on to surveillance basics, giving the tools to follow subjects without being spotted.

SCENARIO BRIEFING: The teams were given a full scenario and back story for their operation. They were given background on their subjects. Their objective - to locate & identify subjects, obtain images, and follow them, obtaining any relevant evidence.

The moment came to put these skills into practice and discover how good the students’ facial recognition skills were…

Covert image taken by a student

Within the first couple of minutes out in the busy, bustling streets of London, one of the students identified a subject in the crowd. I was particularly impressed - this subject’s image was an old photograph from many years ago, yet they were able to find them with ease. We appeared to have a potential Super Recogniser in our midst.

More covert imagery clearly shows subjects of interest

Over the two days, our teams performed brilliantly, managing to locate and identify their subjects and getting stuck into complicated follows around Central London. They were pushed to the limits, with subjects testing all the skills they had learned in the classroom.

I loved it, it was such a great experience and taught me how to detect someone just by their face. I feel like I’ve learned more from this course over just 2 days than over 2 years in my university course.
